2012 Transit of Venus

I am not sure about you but I spent part of Wednesday looking through a solar filter equipped telescope watching as Venus transited the Sun for the last time until December 2117.

A number of people at my workplace also had a look through my telescope and it was interesting to see the differing reactions. Some people expected the event to be more dramatic – I think more like a solar eclipse. Other people just went “Wow!” when they looked through the telescope. My classic story about the day is going to forever remain the women who asked if I wanted to see the transit on her Ipad rather than looking through my telescope!

I do have one annoying memory of the day however. I had brought along some solar viewing glasses to also look at the transit with. I forgot to use them though! Given that the next transit is 105 years away, it is going to forever annoy me that I will never know if my eyesight was good enough to have seen Venus without any sort of optical aid!
