(Posted 4 May 2014) Step outside tonight as soon as the sky begins to darken and you will be rewarded by the beautiful sight of the crescent Moon and planet Jupiter above the North West horizon.
More information about the constellation Gemini The Twins (in which the Moon and Jupiter appear to be in front of) can be found here on Wikipedia. Castor and Pollux are the two brightest ‘real’ stars in Gemini. Jupiter only appears as a star to the unaided eye because of its distance from the Earth.
What is the bright star directly below the moon from sunset over the last week. In the Eastern sky; I am in rural NE Victoria
Graeme,
The brightest star in the evening sky at present above the North Western horizon (as evening twilight ends) is really the planet Jupiter.

Paul Floyd.
