Moonbow over Canberra (with photos)

(Posted 3 July 2015) At first glance tonight, it looked like there was an ice halo around the Moon. Given how cold it is in Canberra at the moment, that didn’t surprise me.

However, the halo was stronger on one side of the Moon and somewhat odd shaped.

Closer examination led to the discovery that it was a moonbow. I could just make out a hint of colour in the moonbow. In the second image (above) I have positioned the Moon behind a tree so I could use a longer exposure to show more colour in it.
