With the excitement building over Comet 2012 S1 ISON, I have prepared a free finder chart for Northern hemisphere viewers located on or near latitude 40 degrees North to assist you with looking for the comet in the lead-up to it’s close encounter with the Sun.

A minimum of large binoculars will be required to locate the comet in the period covered by this chart. The chart has been prepared for New York City, USA but will be useful for other locations around the world at the same latitude as New York City. The chart has been prepared for Eastern Standard Time.

Mars will be located near the comet (refer to the red line on the chart). The brightest star you will also notice while looking for the comet and not located on the part of the sky covered by the comet is the planet Jupiter.

Note that this comet will not be well placed for Southern Hemisphere observers.
