These presentation notes outline the significant predictable astronomical events that occur in 2016 that will be visible to the unaided eye, how observing these events links to the Australian Curriculum (Science) for years 1, 3, 5 and 7 and information on where to download the pre-prepared recording sheets from. In most cases, this will be from this website.

Upcoming events of note this year include a partial solar eclipse visible from Northern Australia on Wednesday 9 March, the 2016 opposition of Mars and the visibility of all five planets to the unaided eye in the evening sky in August (including during National Science Week).

I am a strong believer that students should be encouraged to get out and look at the night sky. There is so much that they can see in the night sky without the need for any sort of optical aid.

From an educational viewpoint, if you provide them with a pre-prepared recording sheet you can turn a students brief look at the night sky into an opportunity for them to record their own data about the real world. This increases their engagement with their learning back in the classroom because they are working with ‘their’ data.

I will be presenting this workshop at the Science Teachers Association of Queensland Science is Primary conference in Brisbane on Saturday 5 March 2016. I also plan to present the workshop via a Google Hangout on Saturday 19 March 2016 at 2 pm AEDT (Canberra Summer time) . Participants in that workshop will be able to claim 1.5 hours of self identified professional development towards their 2016 professional training requirements.
