Planets galore! Mercury, Mars and Saturn in evening twilight. Jupiter and Venus in morning twilight.

Once more, the sky is full of planets even if only temporarily before evening twilight ends or as the morning twilight ends.

As the saying goes, Mercury makes three? Ok, I changed the saying but for at least the next few weeks Mercury does make three in the evening sky, at least temporarily as it joins Mars and Saturn in the evening sky. Mercury is now slowly moving away from the Sun (from our perspective) and reaches maximum elongation next month on the first.

If you are an early riser, enjoy the view low above the Eastern horizon with Venus and Jupiter (Venus is the brighter of the two) temporarily joining Aldebaran (the brightest star in the ancient Greek constellation Taurus The Bull)  over the next few weeks.

  1. I agree. The third star you refer to really is a star by the way (Aldebaran in Taurus The Bull).

    Regards,

    Paul Floyd.

  2. Thank you for the information about the third star. Only clouds today so I am glad I looked yesterday.

  3. For the last week or so I’ve been seeing Venus, Jupiter and Aldebaran really clearly on my drive to work. The last couple of days I swear I can see something tiny just off of Venus (around 11 o’clock if you catch my drift) I was wondering at first if it was a moon – but I understand venus doesn’t have any, so I my next assumption is it’s a star…. is anyone else seeing this or is it my eyes playing tricks on me?

  4. An unexpected early rise this morning and what an inspiring sight! Venus, Jupiter and Aldebaran lined up, with the “seven sisters” in sight too – so beautiful it took our breath away. Do hope many others see it …

  5. Kay,

I agree with you that it is a beautiful sight. It is a pity it is not happening in the evening sky when a lot more people would see it.

    Regards,

    Paul Floyd.

  6. Another beautiful sight this morning the moon seems to be hanging suspended under Venus (I think) its wonderful and the sky is very clear.

  7. Another beautiful sight this morning the moon looks unreal hanging low in the eastern sky, hope that is the right direction. It a very clear sky no clouds glad I’m up early enough to see this beautiful sight.
