Sunspot AR1429 visible to the (protected) unaided eye!

According to Spaceweather.com, Sunspot AR1429 (the cause of the auroras that were visible last night from Southern Australia) is now over seven Earth widths wide. I have just come inside from looking at the Sun using a pair of solar viewing glasses, and could easily see the sunspot without any need for optical aid.

Note that solar viewing glasses are NOT sunglasses. They are specially made for looking at the Sun and contain a specialist filter material. If you don’t have a pair, consider getting a pair before they sell out later this year because of the up-coming transit of Venus (June) and a solar eclipse (November). They only cost around $6 at your local telescope shop.
