Night and day on the Moon

Recording the changing appearance of the Moon is a great first step in becoming an amateur astronomer. It is a nice bright object for practicing your observational skills.

You will find a Moon Phase Recording Chart for each month on this site. The charts are located on the ‘Events and Planet Finder Charts‘ pages for the respective month. Use a soft drawing pencil to shade the unlit part of the disc.

If you record the Moons appearance at the same time each night (as evening twilight ends), you will notice that the Moon moves across the sky. This is caused by the Moon moving in its orbit around the Earth.
