Clouds over Canberra

Hanging out the washing yesterday turned into an opportunity to photograph an interesting cloud formation overhead. I am assuming that the pattern of cloud indicates turbulent air.

Thanks to Bec at the Bureau of Meteorology for identifying that the cloud in the picture is a type of altocumulus cloud. She said that the cloud pattern is caused by wind shear between different levels and that the cloud forms between 8,500 and 20,000 feet. An interesting aside to the conversation was that cloud height is still measured in feet as that is what pilots use still.
