Moon joins Jupiter tonight

If you are new to astronomy, tonight is a great night to step outside and find your first planet.

Moon and Jupiter finder chart. Chart prepared for 7.30 pm AEST (8.30 pm Daylight Savings Time) for Monday 2 January 2012.

Look above the Northern horizon for the waxing gibbous Moon as evening twilight draws to a close. Look to the right and above the Moon for a bright star. Congratulations you have found your first planet – Jupiter. To see another planet as easily, now turn to your left and look for the brightest star you can see above the Western horizon (approximately where the Sun sets). That is Venus.
