Mercury, Venus and Antares align in the evening twilight sky tonight

Update (8.14 pm AEST): A closeup of the two planets and Antares taken with my DSLR a few minutes ago.

Step outside tonight as soon as evening twilight draws to a close and you will see a rare treat. The planets Mercury and Venus plus the star Antares (the brightest star in the ancient Greek constellation Scorpius the Scorpion) will be visible low above the Western horizon in a temporary line.

The chart has been prepared for Brisbane for 7pm AEST tonight (10 November 2011). The chart can also be used for other locations across Eastern Australia. Add one hour if your state or territory follows daylight savings time.

  2. Don,

That was a good guess! A five second exposure using a DSLR lens set to 75mm focal length and 1,600 ASA setting.

    Regards,

    Paul Floyd.
