Use a free robotic telescope

Your students can use the free MicroObservatory Telescope Network to take images of objects such as the Moon, Sun, planets and other celestial objects. No technical knowledge is needed to use the network.

The Network is operated by the Harvard-Smithsonian Centre for Astrophysics. It has telescopes located in different locations around the world including Australia.

The telescope and accompanying resources (including images taken by other users and optional image manipulation software) provide an idea focus for a Year 5/6 (or older) Digital Technologies unit. There are multiple natural links to Science and emphasing cyber safety (as either your students or yourself need to provide an email address to receive your images).

Once you have gone to the main website, click on the ‘Observing with NASA’ image (see above left image) then click the ‘Control telescope’ button (right bottom image) to access the telescope interface.
