Saturn, the crescent Moon and Spica make a temporary triangle in the evening sky

Saturn, the crescent Moon and Spica (the brightest star in the ancient Greek constellation Virgo the Virgin) will form a temporary triangle above the Western horizon in the early evening tonight.

Crescent Moon, Saturn and Spica finder chart 6.30 pm AEST Thursday 1 September 2011. The chart has been prepared for Brisbane (Queensland, Australia) but is also suitable for use across Eastern Australia.

Keep in mind that due to its great distance from Earth, Saturn will only appear as a star to the unaided eye. A small telescope is capable of Saturn’s rings easily if you happen to own one.

  1. I am at Middlemount Qld. I just witnessed a lunar eclipse? I was looking a the crescent moon as it as really bright, and then something moved down and blocked out the crescent for a about 30seconds and then it moved up again slowly to show the crescent again. I had a witness to show this too. I can’t find any info on an eclipse tonight. Can you help? Kind regards, Christine

  2. Christine,

Unfortunately I can’t help you with your inquiry. There definitively wasn’t a lunar eclipse tonight. These only occur at the time of Full Moon a few times a year.

    Regards,

    Paul Floyd.

  3. I saw this too! I was at Graceville and I noticed the moon was an unusually orange colour, and at around 8.15pm it disappeared as if by an eclipse, and then it lifted again. I also saw something almost like a shadow going across the crescent from left to right after the ‘eclipse’. I stayed watching all this happening probably for about 10 minutes or so- then I saw it again at (I think) around 8.30pm!! I can’t find any information on what happened anywhere??
