Jupiter and its moons tonight

With Jupiter and Venus putting on a sky show above the Western horizon in the evening twilight, don’t forget to get out your telescope and point it at Jupiter.

Image produced for 8 pm AEST Friday 9 March 2012. Add one hour if your location follows daylight savings time. Image produced using SkySafari Pro. Used with permission.

Even a small telescope will be able to show you Jupiter’s four largest moons (as shown above). To find Jupiter, just look above the Western horizon using only your eyes at the end of evening twilight tonight. You will see two very bright stars. The lower is Venus and the higher (less bright but still brighter than any other star) is Jupiter.
