Jupiter impact!

It’s happened again! This time, the moment of explosion in Jupiter’s upper atmosphere when either a comet or asteroid impacted it, was caught on video. The impact happened this morning at 6.31am AEST.

Expert amateur planetary imagers Anthony Wesley (Australia) and Christopher Go (the Phillipines) were imaging Jupiter at the time and captured the impact explosion on video. Christopher Go’s video of the impact can be found here.

This is Anthony Wesley’s second discovery of an impact on Jupiter in less than a year. The first was discovered on 19 July 2009 when he imaged the remains of an impact. He has just updated his website with a video of impact taken from his viewing location in Australia. The 24 second video can be downloaded here.
