Saturn at opposition tonight

Saturn is at opposition tonight – making it prime time to look at Saturn with even the smallest of telescopes. The term opposition sounds mysterious but simply means that Saturn rises as the Sun sets tonight and sets as the Sun rises tomorrow morning. It also coincides with Saturn’s closest approach to Earth for the year. Mars is also visible to the left of and above Saturn. As an aside, the bright star above Saturn is Spica – the brightest star in the ancient Greek constellation Virgo The Virgin.

Saturn and Mars finder chart. Monday 16 April 2012. Chart prepared for Brisbane (Queensland, Australia) but will be useful for all locations across Eastern Australia.
