Say goodbye to Saturn and Jupiter for Summer 2022!

Saturn and Jupiter are about to disappear from our evening twilight sky for the rest of Summer 2022. A combination of the Earth’s speedier orbital motion around the Sun and the relative slower motion of Jupiter and Saturn are causing this to occur. Think of it like competing racing cars zooming around a racetrack. Both the gas giants are being left behind and from our perspective, will soon be lost in the glare of the Sun.

Moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn finder chart. Chart prepared for the evening twilight for 8 pm AEST / 9 pm AEDT on Wednesday 5 January 2022 for the Gold Coast, Queensland (but will be also useful for elsewhere in Eastern Australia including Canberra). You will need a clear Western horizon and a pair of binoculars to increase your likelyhood of finding Mercury. Chart produced using the highly recommended Sky Safari 6 plus app.

Saturn will be lost from our view mid-January and Jupiter by the start of February 2022. Early morning risers will be able to locate both gas giants low on the Eastern horizon in the morning dawn sky in March 2022 post conjunction with the Sun.
