(Posted 8 January 2013) Canberra’s Sunday nights sunset was transformed by two small bush fires in the nearby Brindabella Ranges into a dramatic and beautiful science lesson.
Smoke particles given off by the fires scattered the shorter blue wavelengths of light from the Sun leaving only the red wavelengths of light to reach the camera. The shadows of a couple of coincidentally well placed clouds made the scene even more beautiful.
For those who remember the disastrous 2003 Canberra fires and the fact that the initial spot fire was not attacked, the opposite has occurred in this case. Water bombers and fire crews were sent in to attack and limit the spread of both fires.
