Next partial solar eclipse visible from Australia on Friday 10 May 2013

(Published 14 November 2012. Updated 26 November 2012 and 20 January 2013)

After having just watched the spectacular total solar eclipse this morning from Cairns in Far North Queensland, my thoughts have turned naturally to when the next solar eclipse is visible from Australia.

I have good news and bad news. The good news is that a partial eclipse (or annular eclipse if you are in the correct part of  Northern Australia) will be visible from most of Australia (including Perth) on Friday 10 May 2013.  You can calculate the exact circumstances by using this special Google Maps/NASA page. The next total eclipse won’t be visible in Australia until 22 July 2028.

Finally, I have created a pinhole viewer which allows you to indirectly view the eclipse from your location. I have included eclipse event times and the appearance of the Sun at maximum eclipse for a variety of cities across Australia. Download it here: 2013_Solar_Eclipse_Pinhole_Viewer

  1. I am planning a wedding for the May eclipse in Hawaii. I am seeing different dates posted for the big Island…Can you let me know if it is going to be the 9th or the 10th local Hawaiian time? And, Will it be visible from the Hilo side of the island or only Kona?

  2. Sadie,

I am not familiar with Hawaii. I suggest you Google either astronomical societies or public observatories for Hawaii, and email them your questions.

    Regards,

    Paul Floyd.
