Use Google Maps to find out duration of totality for your location for tomorrows solar eclipse

If you are lucky enough to be in Far North Queensland tomorrow morning and happen to be in exactly the right area (see below map and you need to be between the blue lines) either by planning or sheer luck, remember that the stars will come out for a few minutes during the day when totality occurs during tomorrow mornings total solar eclipse.

Thanks to Google Maps and NASA, you can go to this page and find out how long totality will last for your location.

As a test, I got Google to provide me with eclipse time information for the Esplanade in Cairns as an example. What you are looking for is the start and end of total eclipse times (C2 and C3). One thing to be aware of is that the time Google Maps will give you is in what astronomers refer to as Universal Time. This is used by astronomers around the world to avoid confusion about when events are occurring.

Continuing to use the Esplanade, Cairns as an example, Google Maps says that the total phase of the eclipse will occur at 20:38:33.5 on 13 Tuesday November and ends at 20:40:33.9 on Tuesday 13 November. To convert to Australian Eastern Standard Time, just add 10 hours to the times. That changes the start time of totality to 6:38:33.5 am AEST and the end of totality to 6:40:33.5 am AEST on 14 November 2012. That is 2 minutes and .4 of a second for totality if you are standing on the Esplanade. If that is confusing, Timeanddate.com has a conversion page that I recommend.

Finally, remember that the only time you can look at the Sun is when the Sun is totally covered by the Moon. Do not look directly at the Sun without specialist eye protection at any other time. This does not include sunglasses.
